This NYC Greenwich Village restaurant located at 65 Fourth Avenue is known for its ramen, but it has great appetizers as well.
"M" and I shared the Hirata buns with pork (2 for $8) and Hirata Chicken Wings (5 for $10). The pork inside the buns was very tender, dressed with Ippudo "buns" sauce and there was even a thin sliver of lettuce (is that the "vegetable" to compensate for the pork fat?). The chicken wings were fried crispy on the outside and moist on the inside - finger licking good - served with special black pepper sauce.
"M" had Shiromaru Hakata Classic Ramen and I had the Akamaru Modern Ramen - both $13.
Shiromaru Hakata Classic is the "the original tonkotsu" soup noodles with slices of simmered berkshire pork, kikurage, red pickled ginger, menma, 1/2 hard boiled egg, sesame & scallions.
Akamaru Modern is "the original tonkotsu" soup noodles with Ippudo's special sauce, miso paste and fragrant garlic oil, slices of simmered berkshire pork, cabbage, onions, kikurage & scallions.
The broth for both ramens was thicker and opaque - very different from other ramens that we have previously eaten.
Even though the dessert menu was a cute little picture book that fit in the palm of your hand nothing inspired us so we passed.
