...is a chainlet of vegetarian eateries that started in Amersterdam. Currently there are 4 in NYC. I went to the one in the Garment District at 200 West 40th Street. I don't call it a restaurant because there are not tables or chairs, just a narrow counter that if you can squeeze past the long line you can quickly eat your lunch.
The base of the sandwich and salad is the falafel. I tried the Maoz sandwich ($4.95) which is 5 falafel balls and lettuce in a plain or whole wheat pita. You can add hummus ($0.75), eggplant ($0.75) and/or feta cheese ($1.00).
Once you place your order you wait a few minutes and your receipt number is called. Your lunch is handed to you in an open container (or in my case, pita). Then you return to the line and add as many of the toppings and sauces that you want from the bar.
There is quite a selection: vegetable salad, pickles, pickled eggplant, coleslaw, red cabbage, broccoli/cauliflower, green and black olives, carrot salad, tabouli salad, chickpea salad and beets. Sauces include tahini, garlic, yogurt, cilantro, salsa, spicy green chili and tomato and onion.
I had a plain Maoz in whole wheat pita with vegetable salad, chickpea salad, tabouli salad and yogurt sauce. It was a good, quick, inexpensive veggie lunch option.
At the end of the line a counterperson takes you lunch, packs it to go and then you are out the door. Even the line was 15 people long this moved quickly and is a good lunch alternative to delis and pizza.
