This is the first time I have tried Balkan food or have been inside a Balkan restaurant. And they have not one, not two, but four locations in NYC. I went to Djerdan Three in the Garment District on West 38th Street (between 7th and 8th Avenues) and ordered a slice of beef Burek for $4.95. This is phyllo dough filled with chopped beef and shaped/sliced like a pizza in quarters. It's akin to a Jamaican beef patty or empanada...meat inside pastry dough! Always a good combo.
They also offer with cheese or spinach filling and with yogurt sauce . The waitress was very friendly and said "I hope to see you again" as I walked out with my takeout Burek.
