Keep Calm

These books were at the Barnes & Noble Bookstore in NYC's Union Square.
The common British saying is "Keep calm and carry on". I like the the 2nd version: "Keep calm and have a cupcake", but the 3rd version is hilarious: "Screw Calm and get angry"!

The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake

...is the title of a new book by Aimee Bender. Now, personally, I have never found any sadness when it comes to Lemon Cake. But this book is about a young girl who can taste feelings in food. So when some is sad or angry she can taste these emotions in their food. It's an interesting book.

Far Flung and Well Fed

This is a compilation of food articles by R.W. Apple - former news writer and correspondent. It's a lighthearted look at the world through food.

Cooking Dirty

is the title of a memoir by Jason Sheehan...it's like an NC-17 version of Anthony Bourdain's "Kitchen Confidential"...everything you DIDN'T want to know about the people working in the kitchens. It's both funny and frightening. You hope the author is exaggerating...

Knives at Dawn

"Knives at Dawn" sounds like a duel and in a way it is. The book by Andrew Friedman recounts the USA team as it prepares to compete in the 2009 Bocuse d'Or. It's like Top Chef in book form, but with a year's worth of behind the scenes drama.

I Loved, I Lost, I Made Spaghetti

is the title of a memoir by Giuli Melucci.

Thanks to my local library I was able to borrow and read this book about the trials and tribulations of her love life and the cooking that accompanied each relationship. It was a fun, quick read and there were recipes within each chapter.

Appetite City

This is the title of a new book by William Grimes. Well, the full title is "Appetite City: A Culinary History of New York".

Mr. Grimes was a former NY Times food critic. This book recounts almost 200 years of food history in NY.

The Tenement Museum located at 108 Orchard Street in NYC's Lower East Side hosted a talk and book signing today.

The book is priced at $30, but alas, I am still on my book diet so I did not purchase a copy. But I look forward to reading this book when it becomes available at my local library.

Born Round

I just finished reading Frank Bruni's autobiography. He was the former New York Times Food Critic.

His life story about his struggle with food and eating is funny, sad, touching and entertaining.

Thanks to the Public Library I was able to read this book.

Michelin Guide

On Tuesday, 10/6/09 NYC's midtown branch of Borders Books at 10 Columbus Circle hosted a panel discussion with Jean-Luc Naret of the Michelin Guide. Mike Colameco (of PBS fame) moderated a panel that also included Danny Meyer (restaraunteur known for Union Square Cafe and Gramery Tavern), Mimi Sheraton (former NY Times restaurant critic), Jean-Georges Vongritchen (chef and restauranteur), Lee Schrager (who organizes the Miami and NY Food & Wine shows) and Karen Kruger (editor of Food & Wine Magazine).

There was also a book signing afterwards, but alas, I am still on my book diet and abstained from buying the $16.95 NY Michelin Guide.
